Gluten Free / Dairy Free Stores in NJ

Below is an alphabetical list of stores where one can find a good selection of gluten free / dairy free products in New Jersey.  I've tried to list out the brands you can find in each of these but keep in mind that inventories change and for the chains, not every location will carry the exact same products.  (I've left out soy milks as I find most stores carry a wide selection of non-dairy milks now.)  I will update this list as I encounter more gf/df stores.

I have listed the independent shops first.  Sadly, they can not match the economies of scale the major chains have and therefore tend to have higher prices.  However, you are more like to find obscure products, upstart companies, and new products in these locations.

Local Specialty Stores:

A&A Health Foods- (99 Godwin Avenue, Midland Park, NJ 07432)  I haven't been here in a while but they have a nice selection.  (Their website is pretty sparse and lacks a list of products they carry.)

A1 Nutrition Store - (210 Main Ave, Passaic Park, NJ 07055)  (Passaic Park is a nicer section of Passaic so you may need to use Passaic in your GPS/on Google maps)  I was only ever here years ago.  They have a vast selection.  While they don't list it on their website, when I was there they had an eclectic collection of Ener-G products I had never seen anywhere else!  Their website lists these brands: 1-2-3, Bob's Redmill, Gluten Free Pantry, Glutino, Heaven Mills, Kinnikinnick, Mary's Gone Crackers, Tinkyada, Udi's, and Van's.

Autumn Harvest Health Foods (1624 East 2nd Street, Scotch Plains, NJ 07076) – an average sized health food store that is a little above average on price for a standalone store. They don’t have a website. Brands included: Amy’s, Ancient Harvest, Bionaturae, Bob’s Red Mill, De Boles, Ener-G, Enviro-kidz, Food Should Taste Good, French Meadow, GF Pantry, Gillian’s, Glutino, Kinnikinnick, Lucy’s, Nature’s Path, Orgran, Pamela’s, Rudi’s, Schär, Tinkyada, and Udi’s.

Big Bear Natural Foods – (21 Artic Parkway, Ewing, NJ 08520, 239 North Union Street, Lambertville, NJ, 08530, and #7 Rt 31, Pennington, NJ 08534 (plus two other locations in PA)) – There are three of these stores but I’ve only ever visited the Pennington location. Their brands included: Ancient Harvest, Andean Dream, Bionaturae, Bob's Redmill, Daiya, DeBoles, Dutch County, Ener-G, Envirokids, Glow, Glenny's, Gluten Free Cafe, Gluten Free Pantry, Glutenfreeda, Glutino, Ian's, Jovial, Jo-Sef, King Arthur, Kinnikinnick, Liz Lovely, Lucy's, Mary's Gone Crackers, Namaste, Pamela's, Rudi’s, Schär, Tinkyada Udi's, and Van's.

Bonterra Market (3112 Fire Road, Egg Harbor Township, NJ 08234) – I haven't been.

Corrado's - (1578 Main Avenue, Clifton 07011, NJ and 201 Berdan Avenue, Wayne, NJ 07470) - Some items in Corrado's are very inexpensive (fresh produce, their store brand) but others are quite expensive (including a lot of the GF options).  Last I was there they had: Arrowhead Mills, Bakery on Main, Bionaturae, Bob's Redmill, Conte's, DeliFree (corn pasta from Italy), Dutch Country (large soft pretzels you bake yourself), Feel Good Foods (dumplings), Gluten Free Naturals, Glutino, Hodson Mill, Joan's, Jo-Sef, Jovial, Kinnikinnick, Le Veneziane, Mary's Gone Crackers, Pamela's (mixes only), Really Great Food Co., Sam Mills, Schär, Sweet Sin and Udi's.

Dean’s Natural Food Market (1119 Highway 35 Ocean, NJ 07712 and 490 Broad Street Shrewsbury, NJ 07702) – an amazing variety of gluten free / dairy free products! Prices were reasonable for a store this size. They also had gluten free bread in their deli area for made-to-order sandwiches. Brands included: 1-2-3 Gluten Free, Amy’s, Ancient Harvest, Andean Dream, Arrowhead Mills, Bell and Evans, Bob’s Red Mill, Conte, De Boles, Ener-G, Enviro-kidz, Feel Good Foods (including egg rolls!), GF Pantry, Gilbert’s Goodies, Gillian’s, Glenny, Glutino, Go Picnic, Heaven Mills, Ian’s, Joan’s, Katz’s, Kettle Cuisine, Kind, Kinnikinnick, Liz Lovely, Lucy’s, Lundburg brown rice pasta, Maple Grove Farms, Mary’s Gone Crackers, Namaste, Organic Bistro, Pamela’s, Rudi’s, Schär, Three Bakers (old Grainless Baker), Tinkyada, Udi’s, Van’s, and Yehuda Gluten Free Masa.

Dearborn (2170 Rt35S, Holmdel, NJ07733) Brands include: Bell and Evans, Bob’s Red Mill, Crunchmaster, Glutino, Ian’s, Kind, Lucy’s, Schär, and Udi’s. They only have a very limited selection of each brand. The real reason I mention them is for those who can have dairy – they have homemade gnocchi and ravioli (both contain dairy).

GF Tasting Counter at DeLiteful Foods in Lawrenceville, NJ
DeLiteful Foods – (4110 Quakerbridge Road, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648) – this could be the most amazing GF store I’ve visited so far. The shop has two rooms, the first when you enter is gluten containing food, and the second (off to the right) is gluten free food. The GF room is bigger and has a bigger selection. The highlight of the GF room is a tasting bar where you can sample a number of GF products before deciding if you want to buy them. The brands I saw when I was there were: 1-2-3 Mixes, Amy's, Ancient Harvest, Andean Dream, Bakery on Main, Bell & Evans, Betty Lou’s, Bi Aglut, Bionaturae, Blue Horizon, Canyon Bakehouse, Celiac Specialties (chocolate donut holes), The Craving Place, DeBoles, Dutch Country, Ener-G, Feel Good Foods, Foods by George, Food Should Taste Good, Gillian's, Glenny's, Gluten Free Cafe, Gluten-Free Naturals, Gluten Free Pantry, Glutino, Ian's, Joans, Jovial, Katz, Kettle Cuisine, Le Veneziane, Lucy's, Mary's Gone Crackers, Mrs, Lepper’s, Namaste, Organic Bistro, Orgran, Pamela's, Rudi’s, Russo’s (cannoli shells), Sam Mills, Schär, Shabtai, Solterra Pizza, Starfish, Sweet Sin, Tinkyada, and Udi's.  I haven't been since they moved this summer.

Donaldson Farm – (358 Allen Road Hackettstown, NJ 07840) - In addition to lots of fresh (naturally gluten free produce) this farm stand has a small GF section. Their brands include: 1-2-3 Mixes, Amy's, Ancient Harvest, Andean Dream, Arrowhead Mills, Bakery on Main, Bell & Evans, Conte's, Katz, Schär, and Van's.

460w x 60h (4) Gluten-Free Mall for Gluten-Free Foods

Grassroots Natural Market – (20 First Ave, Denville, NJ 07834) This was one of the first health food stores I visited after going gluten free. They have a large frozen variety (although most of it is tucked sort of behind the lunch counter). Their brands include: Amy's, Ancient Harvest, Arrowhead Mills, Bakery on Main, Bell & Evans, Bob's Redmill, Daiya, DeBoles, Evol, Ener-G, Envirokids, Foods by George, Gluten Free Pantry, Glutino, Kinnikinnick, Liz Lovely, Mary's Gone Crackers, Namaste, Pamela's Mixes, Purely Decadent, Schär, So Delicious, Terra, Tinkyada, Tofutti, Udi's, Van's and Vegan Gourmet.

Great and Gluten Free (431 US Highway Route 22 East in Bishops Plaza, Whitehouse Station, NJ 08889) - I haven't been but some of their brands are listed on their website: 1-2-3 Gluten Free, absolutely gluten free, BiAglut, Bold, Canyon Bakehouse, Celiac Specialties, Enjoy Life, Glutenfreeda, Glutino, Gillian's, Immaculate Baking Co., Joan's GF Great Bakes, Katz, King Soba, Kinnikinnick, Schär, Starfish, Three Bakers, and Udi's.

Green Life Market (1388 Rte. 23 North, Butler, New Jersey 07405) – I haven't been here yet, but I'll try to check them out soon.

Harmony Natural Foods [no website] (1521 Rt35N, Middletown, NJ 07748). By far the widest selection of any store on this list! They have an entire gluten free isle, two gluten free refrigerated cases and 3-4 gluten free freezer cases. Amazing! Brands include: 1-2-3 Gluten Free, Ancient Harvest, Authentic Foods, Bakery on Main, Biaglut, Bob’s Red Mill, Celiac Specialties, Cherrybrook Kitchen, Craving Place, De Boles, Dutch Country, Ener-G, Enjoy Life (big cookies), Enviro-Kidz, Feel Good Foods, Foods by George, French Meadow, GF Naturals, GF Pantry, Gillian’s, Glenny, GlutenFreeda, Glutino, Go Raw, Goldbaums, Heaven Mills, Ians, Joan’s, Jovial, Katz’s, Kind, Kinnikinnick, Le Veneziane, Lucy’s, Mary’s Gone Crackers, Mrs Leepers, Naked Nuggets, Namaste, Nature’s Path, Orgran, Pamela’s, Par Dela, Rudi's, Schär, Shabtai, Sweet Sin, Tia's, Tinkyada, Tree of Life, Udi’s, and Van’s.

Healthway Natural Foods (35 Riveredge Road, Tenafly, NJ 07670) – brands include: Beanitos, Bearitos, Crunchmaster, Enjoy Life, Food for Life, Foods Alive, Foods by George, Garden of Eatin’, Glenny’s, GlutenFreeda, Glutino, Go Raw, Julian Bakery, Kinnikinnick, Orgran, Road’s End, Schär, Two Moms in the Raw, and Udi’s. I haven’t been yet.

Jack’s Health Food Country (1107 Inman Avenue, North Edison, NJ 08820) – I haven't been yet.

Linda’s Diet Delite – (1049A Raritan Road, Clark, NJ 07066) – I recently visited this shop for the first time. They have fairly diverse offering. Their website states 40% of the shop is gluten free and I certainly believe it! Their brands include: Bakery on Main, Bell & Evans, Bi Aglut, Bob's Redmill, Bread by Anna (this is the only place in NJ I’ve seen these mixes), Celiac Specialties (Crossaints only), Conte's, Dutch Country, Ener-G, Envirokids, Feel Good Food, French Meadow, Foods by George, Glenny's, Gluten Free Pantry, Glutino, Hodgson Mill, Ian's, Katz, Kettle Cuisine, Kind, King Arthur, Kinnikinnick, Le Asolane Pasta (first time I’ve ever seen this pasta from Italy), Le Veneziane, Lillian’s (frozen fish dinners which I’ve never seen elsewhere), Namaste, Pamela's, S'Better, Sam Mills, Schär, Shabtai, Something Good Mixes, Sweet Sin, Tinkyada, Udi's, and Van's.

Market Basket (813 Franklin Lake Road, Franklin Lakes, NJ 07417). This private grocery is a touch pricey. Brands include: 1-2-3 Gluten Free, Amy’s, Bob’s Red Mill, Enjoy Life (large cookies), Glutino, Ian’s, Jovial, King Arthur’s, Kinnikinnick, Lucy’s, Misura (gf pasta from Italy), Shabtai, Tinkyada, Udi’s, and Van’s.

Nature’s Harvest (28 Main Street, Blairstown, NJ 07825) – they offer Amy's, Ancient Harvest, Bell and Evans, Bella Lucia, Bionaturae, Bob's Red Mill, Canyon Bakehouse, Cherrybrook, Deboles, Ener-G, Enjoy Life, Envirokids, Foods by George, Foods for Life, French Meadow, GF Cafe, GF Pantry, Glutenfreeda, Go Raw, Glutino, Kind, Kinnikinnick, Nameste, Pamela's, Rudi's, Schär, Thai Kitchen, Tinkyada, and Udi's.

Nature's Pavilion - (Rt.23N in Pompton Plains, NJ 07444) This is the closest independent shop to me but with a Whole Foods, Kings and Shoprite all closer I don't stop in here very often.  They have a very large gluten free selection including: 1-2-3, Bob's Redmill, DeBoles, Glenny's, Glutenfreeda, Gluten Free Cafe, Gluten Free Pantry (very large selection), Glutino, Pamela's, Tinkyada (including large shells for stuffing), and Vegan Gourmet.

Organico (495 North Franklin Turnpike, Ramsey, NJ 07446) – I'm listing this one more than once as they are a health food shop but also a lunch counter / juice bar as well.  They carry a small selection of gluten free products including some by Ancient Harvest, Bionaturae, Bob’s Redmill, Food for Life, Glutenfreeda, Go Raw, Kind, Kinnikinnick, Oskri, Pure!, Tinkyada, and Udi’s. [They are one of the few places to get Pure!’s cookies outside of NY.] Here's my review of Organico.

Pamela's Health and Harmony (8508 Ventnor Ave., Margate, NJ 08402) – I have never been.

Water-To-Go (226 South White Horse Pike, Audubon, NJ 08106) – [Please note, this weblink opens a site called Gluten Free Dynasty, I’ve listed this as Water-To-Go as that is what is on the sign out front when they were in Pennsauken.] I haven't been back since the move so I'm not sure how accurate this is anymore.  This is the oddest store I’ve ever been in (ok, besides that Pizza parlor/septic tank cleaning company in upstate NY). It is perhaps 2/3’s a furniture store, plus a water bottling shop and a gluten free market. They do however have a wide variety of brands and items, including: 1-2-3 Mixes, Amy's, Bell & Evans, Bi Aglut, Bionaturae, Cherrybrook, Conte's, DeBoles, Ener-G Feel Good Food, Gluten Free Pantry, Glutenfreeda, Glutino, Good Eatz, Joan’s, Jovial, Katz, Kettle Cuisine, Kim and Scott (this is the only place in NJ I’ve seen these pretzels), Kinnikinnick, Le Veneziane, Maxwell’s, Namaste, Pamela's, Rudi’s, Schär, Tinkyada Udi's, and Van's.

Supermarkets and National Chains:

A&P - I find this chain to be a little pricey.  They have recently begun to carry a larger gluten free/dairy free selection but just like their other prices they are a bit high.  Amy's, Bell and Evans, Betty Crocker, Bionaturae, Bob's Redmill, DeBoles, Dr. Praeger's, Envirokids, French Meadow (quite an extensive selection), Glutino, Hodgson Mill, Mary's Gone Crackers, Pamela's, Purely Decadent, Schär, So Delicious, A Taste of Thai, Tinkyada, and Van's.

Fresh Market – (Their only NJ store is 32 Chestnut Ridge Road, Montvale, NJ). This is a smaller upscale grocery. Only their seafood bar clearly listed ingredients (you’ll still need to inquire about cross-contamination). Their brands included: Bell & Evans, Daiya, DeBoles, Ener-G Food Should Taste Good, Immaculate Baking Co., Kind, King Arthur, Mary's Gone Crackers, Organic Bistro, Pamela's, Sam Mills, Terra, Udi's.

Kings - Higher priced and higher quality.  They do often have Bell & Evans GF Chicken Tenders on sale and until recently had Goldbaums pasta.  They're also one of the few places I've seen Schär subrolls.  They have a pretty good selection of gluten free and dairy free items including: Allergy Free Foods, Amy's, Arrowhead Mills, Bakery on Main, Bell & Evans, Betty Crocker, Blue Horizon, Bionaturae, Bob's Redmill, Cherrybrook Kitchen, DeBoles, Diana's Bananas (only the dark chocolate are dairy free), Daiya, Dr. Praeger's, Envirokids, Food Should Taste Good, Glenny's, Gluten Free Pantry, Immaculate Baking Co., Kettle Cuisine, Kind, King Arthur, Nuovo (only gnocchi is GF/DF), Pamela's, Purely Decadent, Schär, So Delicious, Solterra, A Taste of Thai, Terra, Tinkyada, Tofutti, Udi's, Van's, and Whole Soy.

Fairway - I pass the Fairway in Paramus on my way home from work.  They have one of the largest gluten free selections around and are moderately priced.  The store is a little crowded and I wouldn't do my regular grocery shopping there but a stop for items I can't get elsewhere is well worth it.  Most of their products are in dedicated gluten free sections (snacks and freezer case) but there are a couple mixed in elsewhere (pancake mixes, gf kosher, etc.). Their brands include: 1-2-3 Mixes, Amy's, Ancient Harvest, Andean Dream, Arrowhead Mills, Bakery on Main, Bell & Evans, Betty Crocker, Bionaturae, Blue Horizon, Bob's Redmill, Cherrybrook, Conte's, Daiya, DeBoles, Dr. Praeger's, Evol, Ener-G (this is one of only two places I've ever seen their hot dog buns), Envirokids, French Meadow, Food for Life (wraps and english muffins, but the wraps aren't frozen), Foods by George, Food Should Taste Good, Goldbaums, Gillian's, Glenny's, Gluten Free Cafe, Gluten Free Pantry, Glutenfreeda, Glutino, Ian's, Immaculate Baking Co., Jo-Sef, Katz, Kettle Cuisine, King Arthur, Kinnikinnick, Lucy's, Lundberg, Maria Ricardo's, Mary's Gone Crackers, Namaste, Organic Bistro, Orgran, Pamela's, Purely Decadent, S'Better, Schär, Silk Yogurt, So Delicious, A Taste of Thai, Thai Kitchen, Tinkyada (including large shells for stuffing), Tofutti, Udi's, Van's, Vegan Gourmet, and Whole Soy.

Foodtown - Brands I've seen here include: Andean Dream, Bell and Evans, Betty Crocker, Blue Horizon, Bob's Redmill, Cherrybrook Kitchen, Contes, Dr. Praeger's, French Meadow, Gluten Free Pantry, Glutino's, Ian's, Kinnikinnick, Mary's Gone Crackers, Nana, Pamela's, Purely Decadent, Schär, and Vans.

Pathmark - no link on this one as I have found their Gluten Free offerings to be minor to non-existent.

ShopRite - This is where I do the majority of my food shopping.  Their prices are better than most other chains and they tend to have a large gluten free/dairy free selection, including:  AllergyFree Foods, Amy's, Betty Crocker, Bionaturae, Bob's Redmill, Dr. Praeger's, Ener-G, Envirokids, FreeFrom, Foods by George, French Meadow, Gluten Free Cafe, Gluten Free Pantry, Glutino, Hodgson Mill, Kinnikinnick, Mary's Gone Crackers, Notta Pasta, Organic Bistro, Pamela's, Schär, A Taste of Thai, Thai Pavilion, Tinkyada, Tofutti, and Van's.

Stop&Shop - There's one by my Aunt's house that I sometimes stop at just to see if they have anything different/new.  Their brands include: Bionaturae, Bob's Redmill, Cherrybrook Kitchen, Food For Life (the only decent product Food For Life makes are their Brown Rice Wraps, Stop&Shop has them, but not always frozen), Gluten Free Pantry, Glutino, Hodgson Mill, Ian's, Kettle Cuisine, Kinnikinnick, Mary's Gone Crackers, Notta Pasta, Pamela's, Purely Decadent, Schär, A Taste of Thai, Tinkyada, Tofutti, Udi's, and Van's.

Target - Target has recently begun carrying quite a few gluten free and dairy free items.  Their prices tend to be quite reasonable.  I don't find the selection to be wide enough to make a special trip, but if I'm there for something else . . . The brands I've seen there include: Betty Crocker, Cherrybrook Kitchen, Envirokids, French Meadow, Glutino, Kinnikinnick, Namaste, Pamela's, A Taste of Thai, and Tinkyada.

Trader Joe's - I do from time to time poke into Trader Joe's.  They have a number of gluten free and dairy free items.  Mostly these are their own brand.  Trader Joe's has very low prices.  I find however, that their prices match their quality.  I'd say they are great if you're on a budget but most of what can be found there has a higher quality / priced option elsewhere.  That being said, they do have the lowest prices on Udi's bread around.

Walmart – The brands I’ve seen here include: Bakery on Main, Betty Crocker, Bisquick, Bob's Redmill,  Envirokids, Glutino, Pamela's, and Tinkyada

Wegmans - The nearest Wegmans is about 30 minutes south of me so I don't get there very often.  They do however have a pretty good selection of gluten free / dairy free items including: Amy's, Ancient Harvest, Arrowhead Mills, Bakery on Main, Bell and Evans, Betty Crocker, Bionaturae, Bob's Redmill, Cherrybrook, Cookies for Me (including muffins and cupcakes), DeBoles, Ener-G, Foods by George, Gluten Free Cafe, Gluten Free Pantry, Glutenfreeda, Glutino, Go Picnic (not all are GF), Ian's, Jo-Sef, King Arthur, Mary's Gone Crackers, Mrs. Lepper's, Pamela's, Purely Decadent, Schär, So Delicious, Starfish, Sweet Sin, A Taste of Thai, Terra, Tinkyada (including large shells for stuffing), Tofutti, Udi's, Van's, and Vegan Gourmet.

Weis Markets – This chain is mostly in the northwest of the state. Their brands include: Amy's, Betty Crocker, Bionaturae, Bob's Redmill, Envirokids, Glutino, Hodgson Mills, Kind, King Arthur, San J, Schär, A Taste of Thai, Tastykake, Udi's, and Van's.

Whole Foods - The ultimate supermarket for any dietary concern!  Overall their prices are high but realtive to elsewhere their gluten free offerings are moderately priced.  Their wide selection of brands include: 1-2-3 Mixes, Amy's, Ancient Harvest, Andean Dream, Arrowhead Mills, Bakery on Main, Bell & Evans, Blue Horizon, Bob's Redmill, Cherrybrook Kitchen, Cookies for Me, DeBoles, Daiya, Dr. Praeger's, Evol, Ener-G, Envirokids, Food for Life (wraps and english muffins), Food Should Taste Good, Foods by George, Gillian's, Glenny's, Gluten Free Pantry, Glutino, Ian's, Immaculate Baking Co., Jo-Sef, Kettle Cuisine, Kind, King Arthur, Kinnikinnick, Mary's Gone Crackers, Nuovo (only gnocchi is GF/DF), Organic Bistro, Pamela's, Purely Decadent, Simply Organic Mixes, So Delicious, Starfish, A Taste of Thai, Terra, Tinkyada, Udi's, Van's, Vegan Gourmet, and Whole Soy.  (Note, they also carry their own brand and Alexia but both almost always have dairy in them.)

Whole Foods also lists all of the ingredients (and flags the common allergens) on their salad bar / soups / hot food bar.  Cross contamination is still a threat but it is nice to have that information.

Online Retailers:

If you absolutely can not find an item offline then try either of these two online retailers (my preference is to support the local stores that are 'supporting' my diet, but I understand some products are hard to find and some readers don't live close to suitable retail locations).  [Note - both retailer links below are affiliate links - if you click through and make a purchase they will pay a small percentage of the total sale back to me for referring you.]

Amazon.com- They have a very wide variety however, you often have to buy multiples of items (a box of six boxes of cookies for example).

Gluten-Free Mall - This online store is dedicated gluten free. They have a wide variety of items including quite a few frozen items (warning: shipping on frozen items can get expensive). They flag each item by what other major allergens it is free of as well (dairy-free, egg-free, etc.). They often have newly released products before the stores.
